O’Neal, Orlando Rip Celtics By 47

Associated Press

Shaquille O’Neal guaranteed the Orlando Magic wouldn’t be swept in the first round of the playoffs again, and kept his word Friday night.

The Atlantic Division champions buried memories of last year’s threeand-out showing against Indiana, riding O’Neal’s inspired play and improved free-throw shooting to rout Boston 124-77 in Orlando, Fla.

“I don’t look at it the way everybody else does - that we finally got a playoff win,” Orlando coach Brian Hill said. “People say that like we have been going to the playoffs for 100 years. We had played three games. … We are a different basketball team, and it’s a different year all together.”

No one has felt the pressure more than O’Neal, whose poor foul shooting is the team’s biggest weakness. He was a different player at the line Friday night, more deliberate in his approach and in his result - he made 11 of 14 on his way to 23 points.

It was Boston’s worst loss, eclipsing a 44-point shellacking applied by Portland in 1977.

“We entered (Friday’s) game like a bunch of high school kids,” said Dino Radja, held to 10 points.
