Gsl Soccer Wraps Up; Soph Throws No-Hitter

Gonzaga Prep soccer player Ben Lambert gave new meaning to the term “flying by the seat of your pants.”

The senior midfielder was hit so hard while scoring the game’s third goal 16 minutes into the second half that he was knocked off his feet into the air and he landed on his back with his shorts at his ankles.

The host Bullpups (13-1-0-2) finished second in league with a 4-1 victory over North Central (7-5-2-2), Joey Ascolese scoring twice to give him 18 goals.

League champion Mead (14-0-2-0) won 1-0 at Lewis and Clark (7-6-3-0) on Andy Smid’s touch off a cross from Ben Baxter at the 68-minute mark.

Shadle Park midfielder Nathan Axel scored his first goal of a fouryear varsity career (the first two at Rogers) on a penalty kick to cap the Highlanders’ (7-6-0-3) 3-1 home victory over Central Valley (3-12-0-1).

Ferris (3-11-1-1) ended its season at home with a 2-0 win over Rogers (0-16) on goals by David Marr and Brent Mosberry.

First round of league playoffs are Wednesday with Prep hosting North Central and Lewis and Clark traveling to University (7-5-3-1) in loser-out matches.

Frontier League baseball

Cheney sophomore pitcher Tucker Urdahl’s no-hitter wasn’t enough to move the Blackhawks into first place past West Valley in Frontier League baseball.

But East Valley owes him.

While the Blackhawks (9-5) were splitting a doubleheader with the visiting Eagles (10-4) 10-0 and 11-10, the Knights (10-4) swept Clarkston (3-11) 7-4 and 9-2 to share the lead.

Because they won two of three meetings with the Eagles, EV can claim top seed in the end-of-season tournament with a win in its season finale at Pullman on Tuesday.

The Knights, hitting more than .400, scored in each of the first five innings, getting two RBIs apiece from Brock Rogers and Pat Stookey.

A six-run fourth-inning in Game Two that included Keith Osso’s two-run double, was part of EV’s 15-hit outburst.

Osso had four hits for the day as did Steve Pipkin who ran his record to 5-1 in Game Two after recording his fourth save in the opener.

Rich Burland had three hits.

Urdahl blanked the Eagles 10-0 in the opener of the Cheney-WV twinbill, striking out eight and walking two while facing just 17 batters in five innings.

In Game Two, Riley Allen broke WV’s scoring drought with a tworun homer in the second inning and doubled home another run in the Eagles’ three-run third.

Cheney rallied from a 9-4 deficit to tie the game entering the seventh when WV’s Jeremy McClintock doubled and scored on an error and Justin Tichy scored on Andy Imada’s base hit and another error.

Home-standing Colville (7-7) came from behind twice late to sweep Pullman (3-11) 8-7 and 12-10, securing the fourth playoff spot.

A four-run seventh won the opener, spoiling a 3-for-4, 3-RBI effort by Greyhound Tom Gmelch.

A three-run sixth won the second game in which Colville’s Brady Noble went 3 for 4.
