If Only 1994 Was Full Year

From Wire Reports

National League

With a little luck - and a labor agreement - Matt Williams and Barry Bonds could have set the majorleague record for home runs by two teammates in a season last year.

They had 80 homers when the season ended Aug. 12. They needed 35 more in 47 games to tie the record set in 1961 when Roger Maris (61) and Mickey Mantle (54) combined for 115. It could have happened. But Williams says last year was probably his only shot.

“It’s something we can build on, but I honestly can’t say if I’ll ever hit 43 home runs again,” says Williams. “Barry and I fed off each other a lot. … I know there are high expectations of me and Barry, but we don’t go into the season expecting it.”

Williams and Bonds were just 11 homers from the Giants’ franchise record of 91, set by the two Willies in 1965, when Mays hit 52 and McCovey had 39.

Glavine stands firm

Even though he’s been booed, Tom Glavine says he’ll stay on as Atlanta’s player representative until there’s a new collective bargaining agreement.

“I don’t think it would be fair for me to abandon that position and put somebody else in as the player rep before something was resolved,” Glavine said.

“I plan on seeing it through until there is an agreement. And once there is one signed, I’ll probably look long and hard about giving up my player rep duty on a daily basis. I’m still the alternate National League rep, and I think I would continue in that role.”

Clearing the bases

Giants’ Barry Bonds walked three times Saturday and is is 0-for-9 this season, with seven walks… . New York’s Brett Butler had a pair of doubles and has reached base 12 times in four games. He has eight hits and four walks… . Los Angeles Japanese righthander Hideo Nomo of is penciled in to make his major-league debut against Mark Portugal and the Giants on Tuesday … Darren Daulton, drafted by the Phillies in 1980, has been with the same club longer than any other player in the N.L.
