It’s The 50th Anniversary Of Lipizzaner Rescue

From Wire Reports

This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the rescue of the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions by a contingent of Gen. George Patton’s army from a camp where they’d been held in the Sudetenland, and the Lake Champlain Islands Chamber of Commerce is trying to locate soldiers who took part.

It’s part of a July 15-16 commemoration in North Hero, Vt., summer performance home of the horses.

If you’re a horse hero, or just want to attend the celebration, call 802-372-5683.

Silent alarm: Rattled by your alarm clock? Or do you just roll over after that wake-up call and snooze till you lose your get up and go, especially when you’re on the road?

Here’s a new, compact, 3-by-2-inch clock that gently rocks you awake just like mom used to do.

Originally designed for the hearing impaired, the aptly named Shake Awake wakes you up by vibrating under your pillow. Available through direct mail by calling (800) 526-0402, the vibrating alarm clock costs $29.95, plus $4 shipping.

Help wanted: The Adirondack Mountain Club is looking for volunteers to help maintain about 2,000 miles of hiking trails in New York’s Adirondack Park.

The 1-, 4- and 5-day projects include bog bridge construction, rock work and trail clearing. The club also runs workshops on how to do some of these things.

Donations of $20 and $25 offset food and equipment costs on the longer projects. For info and brochure, call (518) 523-3441.

Se habla espanol?: For those folks who learned Spanish - or French - but never get to speak it, the Berlitz Language Center, 323 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, has opened Club Berlitz. It’s a four-week program for $105 that allows you to visit ethnic restaurants, watch films and discuss it afterward in Spanish or French and a game night in which everybody plays Monopoly without ever uttering a word in English. For more information, call (310) 276-1101.
