Policeman On Bicycle Just Escapes Truck

From Staff And Wire Reports

A truck whose driver was fleeing from authorities narrowly missed plowing into a police officer patrolling downtown Coeur d’Alene on a bicycle Sunday.

At about 10:20 p.m., a Coeur d’Alene police officer noticed a truck with a headlight and front license plate missing near the intersection of Sherman and Seventh Street.

The officer approached the truck, smelled alcohol and then asked the driver to pull into the Zips parking lot on Sherman Avenue, according to a Coeur d’Alene police report.

Instead, the driver sped away, driving through back alleys and running a red light in downtown Coeur d’Alene.

Officer Jeff Thurman was riding his bike east on Lakeside Avenue when the truck swerved at him and a fellow officer, according to the police report.

The two police officers had to turn away from the truck to avoid getting run down. The truck came within two feet of Thurman and then sped away, according to the report.

Officers later found the truck crashed at Eighth Street and Montana, but the driver was gone.

Police were able to track down the owner of the truck who apparently had loaned the vehicle to his son and daughter-in-law, said Coeur d’Alene Police Capt. Carl Bergh.

The son and daughter-in-law had in turn loaned the truck to a friend who told officers the truck had been taken from him, Bergh said.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident yet.
