Storm Grows Stronger

Associated Press

Tropical Storm Erin built toward hurricane strength Monday as it churned toward Florida, and up to 650,000 coastal dwellers and visitors were ordered to evacuate.

The storm was expected to hit Florida’s Atlantic Coast sometime today as a weak, but drenching, hurricane.

Hurricane warnings went up in seven counties as the storm moved through the Bahamas along a track similar to the one followed three years ago by devastating Hurricane Andrew.

Erin was centered 360 miles southeast of Miami.
