Vote On Higher Minimum Wage Turned Away

Compiled From Wire Services

The Senate rejected by a single vote Monday an attempt by Sen. Edward Kennedy to prod the Republican leadership into allowing a vote this year on raising the minimum wage.

Led by Republicans, the lawmakers voted 49-48 to kill a measure by the Massachusetts Democrat that would have put the Senate on record as pledging to debate and vote on a minimum wage raise before the end of the session.
