When Miltie Arrived, The Girls Cried, ‘Uncle!’

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

Loose talk

Jeweler Ron Winston, on “Basic Instinct” star Sharon Stone’s refusal to return a diamond necklace loaned to her (in Newsweek): “I really wanted to sue the pants off her, but she doesn’t wear any.”

Hart Seely, a scholar of celebrity memoirs, offers his favorite tales of stars meeting other stars in the latest New Yorker magazine:

In “And the Beat Goes On,” Sonny Bono remembers being introduced to Jackie Kennedy: “‘Your haircut is almost Shakespearean,’ Jackie said to me, a comment that seemed complimentary.”

In “Shelley II,” Shelley Winters reminisces: “Elvis would often come to my house, once bringing me a sack of manure for my dried-up lawn.”

Adam West, TV’s Batman, recalls in “Back to the Batcave” that the pope once said to him: “I love your television show, Mr. West.”

In “Life Is Too Short,” Mickey Rooney reveals his special friendship with Milton Berle: “It was he who took me to my first brothel.”

The celebration, of course, is all in the family

Carroll O’Connor turns 71 today.

She’s not pure, she only acts like it on TV

Tori Spelling’s former personal assistant is being investigated for extortion after allegedly demanding $30,000 to not reveal Spelling’s personal secrets. Karen Tublitz’s attorney admits she asked a tabloid how much she would get for information about the “Beverly Hills 90210” star, but said the call was a joke.

But, as usual, the game was really boring

Aspiring filmmaker Darryl Wharton has filed a $1.8 billion lawsuit claiming director John Singleton stole the idea for “Higher Learning” from him. Said Wharton: “By sending him my script, I invited him into my house. I feel like he stole my TV, had a big Super Bowl party, and didn’t invite me.”

Must’ve been when Don started drinking again

An East Hampton couple who rented their $3.5 million vacation home to Melanie Griffith last summer are suing for $34,000 in damages. Their attorney called it a “disaster,” saying: “Furniture legs were chewed off by pets or children, Baccarat crystal was broken and the mattresses were urinated on.”

It was all downhill after the first night

More from Cindy Crawford on her split with Richard Gere (in USA Weekend magazine): “Some people think it was because he didn’t want children, which it wasn’t. Or it was about his spiritual thing. The main thing was that we didn’t have a life together. We didn’t spend enough time together. And we’re equally responsible for that.”

How could you expect her to play through that?

Courtney Love walked out of Monday’s Lollapalooza show in Pittsburgh after a fan threw a shotgun shell casing onto the stage. Her late husband, Kurt Cobain, killed himself with a shotgun last year.
