Whitworth Selects Naipo For Volleyball

Whitworth announced Wednesday that it has hired former University of Washington coach Hiram Naipo to guide its volleyball team.

Naipo graduated from UW in 1972 and stepped right into coaching. He led UW from 1973-76.

Under Naipo’s tutelage, Shiva Volleyball Club won Washington state championships in 1976 and ‘77 and finished 12th at the United States Volleyball Association national championships in ‘76.

Naipo has worked as an official in Seattle, Spokane and San Antonio. He inherits a Pirates team that finished 4-8 in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges and 10-19 overall last season.

Football

Central Washington assistant coach Rick Redden has been hired to coach running backs and tight ends at Eastern Washington University, the Big Sky Conference school will announce today.

Redden’s hiring follows the departure last week of longtime EWU assistant Jim McElwain, who was named offensive coordinator at Montana State.

McElwain coached quarterbacks

and wide receivers at EWU. With Redden taking over running backs and tight ends, head coach Mike Kramer will coach quarterbacks. Ray Williams, a former part-time volunteer assistant, has been hired to coach receivers.

Golf

Spokane’s Britney Holt lost her opening-round match at the U.S. Girls Junior Golf Championship in Longmeadow, Mass.

Beth Bauer of Valrico, Fla., eliminated Holt 5 and 4 on the 5,910-yard Longmeadow Country Club layout. Bauer and 31 other golfers advanced.

Washington protected its lead after the second day of the 16-team Junior America’s Cup in Boise, although San Diego pulled closer.

The top three scorers on Washington’s four-man team compiled a 4-over-par 217 for a two-day total of 431. San Diego shot a 1-under 212 after an opening 220.

Spokane’s Andy Hastings followed his 75 from Tuesday with a 77. His 150 total is Washington’s third-best score.The tournament concludes today.

Spokane’s Jared Jeffries is three shots behind after the first round of the Washington state men’s amateur tourney at Yakima.

Jeffries shot a 3-under 69 to trail leaders Chris Cone of Vancouver and Ken Rizvi of Redmond.

Darren Slackman of Spokane and Bob Christensen of Hayden Lake, Idaho, shot 70s.

Fishing

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the ocean coho salmon fishing season will close at 11:59 Friday night after four days.

The department estimates the allowable catch of 7,100 coho will be reached by then.
