Chenoweth Endorses Gramm For President

From Staff And Wire Reports

Republican U.S. Rep. Helen Chenoweth has endorsed U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas for president.

She is the first lawmaker from the Northwest to do so, said Howard Orinsky, a spokesman for the Gramm for President Committee.

She became the second member of Idaho’s congressional delegation to announce her support of a Republican presidential candidate.

Two months ago, U.S. Sen. Dirk Kempthorne backed Senate Majority Leader Robert Dole of Kansas, saying he proved his commitment to federalism by supporting Kempthorne’s unfunded mandates bill.

“We can support different candidates and not have a problem,” Kempthorne said Wednesday. “Phil Gramm is a fine man. I enjoy working with him.”

Chenoweth said she believes Gramm will better represent the issues that are important to the West.

Gramm, an author of the Gramm-Rudman balanced budget bill, has been a proponent of a balanced budget and national defense, Chenoweth said.
