Festival Makes Musical Foray Into Spokane

The Schweitzer Institute comes down off the mountain and migrates to Spokane on Wednesday for a chamber music performance at the Met.

Fellows who have come from all over the country and the globe to study contemporary chamber music at Schweitzer will perform a variety of music for strings. Antonin Dvorak will be the most familiar name on the program; his particular genius will be represented by the A Major Piano Quintet.

Emerging talents will comprise the remainder of the performance. A three-movement string quartet by Julian Wachner and Trio No. 3 for violin, viola and cello by Brooke Joyce, also a threemovement work, will receive their Spokane debuts. Other pieces may be selected for this program as well.

The process of putting together these programs began only last Monday, when instructors and students converged. Gunther Schuller, the director of the Festival at Sandpoint, has the task of collecting available scores and shuffling them into interesting and well-rounded programs that can be performed by the instrumental forces on hand.

In addition to the instruction and direction these young composers garner under the tutelage of Schuller and composition instructor Donald Erb, the Schweitzer Institute offers a valuable opportunity for public performance.
