Goydos Leads Pga Buick

Compiled From Wire Services

Paul Goydos shot 7-under-par 65 after a 6-hour rain delay for a one-shot lead over Jeff Sluman and J.P. Hayes in the first round of the PGA’s Buick Open at Grand Blanc, Mich.

Scott Verplank, Kenny Perry, David Peoples and Yoshi Mizumaki shot 67 over the waterlogged course at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.

Defending champion Fred Couples was in a large group at 68.

Because of thunderstorms in the area, many players in the afternoon groups were still on the course when darkness fell. They were scheduled to complete their first round early today before the start of the second round.

At Stratton Mountain, Vt., for the first time in 12 years fog, forced postponement of a round in an LPGA tournament.

The persistent fog rolled in during the night over the mountainous course and never lifted as tournament officials waited until midafternoon before calling off the first round of the McCall’s Classic.

The 72-hole, $500,000 tournament will be cut to 54 holes, with the top 70 players and ties qualifying for Saturday’s second round.
