Dna Tests Could Hurt Defense Case

Newsday

A prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson case revealed Friday that ongoing genetic fingerprinting tests - the most discriminating DNA tests used today - are expected to confirm the presence of Ronald Goldman’s blood in Simpson’s Ford Bronco.

But Superior Court Judge Lance Ito barred any further mention of the tests pending the outcome of a hearing on whether the jury will hear the test results.

Ito said he was concerned, as is the defense, about an unexplained delay of about two months in the testing process.

If the prosecution is allowed to present the evidence, it would be in rebuttal to the defense, which is seeking to bar further test results from evidence.

These new tests, if they do corroborate the presence of Goldman’s blood, would be some of the most damaging evidence yet because they would establish an unexplainable link between Simpson and Goldman.

So far, the only test results on the Bronco blood have come from PCR tests, a less discriminating test that is used more to exclude people than to identify them.
