Former Spokane Representative Dies

A former state representative from Spokane and longtime attorney has died. Bernard J. Gallagher, 83, died Thursday.

Gallagher was a Democratic representative from the 5th District from 1941 to 1943. He represented the 3rd District from 1949 to 1960.

He practiced law in Spokane until his death.

During World War II, Gallagher served in the U.S. Army Office of Special Investigations.

He was a graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School, Gonzaga University and Gonzaga Law School.

Gallagher is survived by son Bernard J. Gallagher Jr., of Alexandria, La.; daughter Mary Dilley, of Vashon, Wash.; daughter Margaret Richards of Spokane; and son Paul A. Gallagher of Everett, Wash.; brother Gene Gallagher of Spokane; sister Lucille Curran of St. Paul, Minn.; sister Mary Parker of Shelby, Mont.; and 11 grandchildren.

A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Rose Chapel of the Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
