Man In Standoff Charged With Robbery

From Staff And Wire Reports

A man arrested after a standoff with Spokane police now faces a federal bank robbery charge, Justice Department officials said Friday.

Daniel J. Ostin, 38, is charged with the July 26 holdup of a U.S. Bank branch at 508 W. Third.

The gunman who robbed the bank escaped with $607 in cash before a package of red dye exploded in his hands.

An FBI agent who arrested Ostin

in 1994 for robbery recognized him when the bank security camera video was reviewed, court documents say.

When police and FBI agents went to a home at 1506 E. 38th on July 27 to arrest Ostin, a three-hour standoff ensued.

In another case, Douglas B. Ostberg, 55, pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court to armed bank robbery.

He confessed to robbing another U.S. Bank branch, at 3909 N. Lincoln, on Feb. 14. He escaped with $657 in that holdup.

Judge Justin Quackenbush set sentencing for Oct. 13.
