Union Legislation Triggers Strike, Riots

SATURDAY, AUG. 5, 1995

Police fired tear gas grenades at rock-throwing demonstrators Friday, the first day of a general strike by workers angered by legislative proposals to curb Panama’s powerful unions.

Three men were killed during street battles between riot police and protesters, police said. Six police officers and dozens of civilians were injured, and 300 demonstrators were arrested.
