Sandwich Shop Hit By Robber

From Staff And Wire Reports

A man made off with cash from a downtown sandwich shop early Saturday after threatening to kill the clerk and his customers.

The man entered the Subway store on West Third near Division and waited while three teenage girls paid for their orders.

When the teens sat down with their sandwiches, the man leaned over the counter and demanded the clerk give him the money in the register, Spokane police said.

The man told the employee he had a gun, but never showed it. The assailant also told the clerk he would kill him and his customers if he did not give him the money.

The thief grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and dashed from the store.

No one was injured during the robbery and the teens were unaware the store was being robbed, police spokesman Dick Cottam said.

Witnesses told police the man was white, about 35-years-old, 5 feet 11 inches tall and of average build. He was wearing a flannel shirt and dark baseball cap. His wavy, sandy-colored hair touched his collar.
