Sluman 15-Foot Putt Paves Way For First In Buick Open Golf

Jeff Sluman rolled in a 15-foot putt on the 18th hole for a 67 and a one-stroke lead over Tom Byrum after three rounds of the Buick Open golf tournament at Grand Blanc, Mich., Saturday

Fred Couples, Mike Brisky and Joel Edwards were two strokes off the lead at 14 under par.

At Belton, Mo., Jay Sigel sank an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for a 4-under-par 66 and a one-stroke lead over three other golfers after two rounds of the VFW Seniors Championship.

Sigel, whose 65 on Friday left him two back of Buddy Allin, goes into today’s final round with a 9-under 131 for two rounds over the narrow 6,664-yard Loch Lloyd course.

Fifteen seniors were within five shots of the lead, including defending champion and leading money winner Jim Colbert, who followed Friday’s 68 with a 66.

At Stratton Mountain, Vt., Dottie Mochrie and Pat Bradley shot 5-under-par 67s on to share the second-round lead in the LPGA McCall’s Classic.

Mochrie and Bradley, who started the day two strokes behind Catrin Nilsmark and Allison Finney, had 8-under 136 totals on the Stratton Mountain course, which has been marred by rain throughout the tournament. Amy Fruhwirth was one back after a 66.

Robin Walton of Clarkston, Wash., shot a 70 for a total of 142 while Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, fired 71 for 144 total.
