Gunmen Shoot Charity Workers

Compiled From Wire Services

Robbers shot a group of Italian charity workers Sunday in a Zairian wildlife preserve, killing four adults and two children and wounding another adult, their charity group announced.

The adults were helping to build water supply and electric power facilities for Rwandan refugees, said Domenico Colombo, a spokesman for the group A Just World, based in Lecco, Italy.

Much of eastern Zaire is dominated by armed bands of exiled Rwanda militiamen.

The Italians were on an outing in Virunga Park, Colombo told RAI state television. The park, famous as the home of endangered mountain gorillas, runs along Zaire’s border with Rwanda and Uganda.
