Colfax Students Win Awards In Problem-Solving Contest

Five Colfax (Wash.) High School students competed with some 1,800 students in the International Future Problem Solving Bowl in Providence, R.I.

Lisa Mabbutt, who will be a senior in the fall, placed first overall in the senior division individual competition.

The team of Ibra Bordsen, Travis Baldree, Megan Carr and Karen Mabbutt placed 16th in the senior division team competition. Coach Tenny Brannan was also on a first-place team in the coaches’ competition.

Marshall Drummond, president of Eastern Washington University, has been named to a second national committee to provide oversight and guidance for the U.S. Department of Energy’s environmental cleanup activities.

In June, Drummond began serving on the National Research Council’s Committee on Environmental Management Technologies.

Spokane Sheriff Lt. David Wiyrick was elected vice president of the Spokane Valley Lions Club. He has been with the sheriff’s office more than 22 years and recently transferred from the patrol division. He represents Sheriff John Goldman as public information officer.

Victoria Nicacio, Miss Spokane 1995, placed 11th in the recent Miss Washington Scholarship pageant.

Jill Charles, daughter of Janice and Tom Charles, received a Trustee Scholarship at Seattle University and an Honors Program Scholarship. She is a National Merit Finalist and was included in the 1995 edition of “Who’s Who in American High Schools.” She is a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Safeco Insurance Companies recently announced the winners of their Award of Excellence for 1995. The Spokane area agents are: Gary Buck, Buck and Affiliates; Dan Hoffman, Hoffman Insurance; Gerry Bulger, Sedgwick James; and Jan Krough, Jan Krough Insurance Inc. Also honored was Don McQuary, Stonebraker-McQuary Insurance in Clarkston, Wash.

The Spokane County Domestic Violence Consortium has received the Kendall I. Lingle Community Resources Award presented by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

The award is given to the community that best promotes court and community partnerships using local resources to address juvenile and family problems.

The Spokane County consortium was selected over other cities such as Oakland and San Jose, Calif; Chicago; Pontiac, Mich.; and Toledo, Ohio. It’s the first time a West Coast city has won the prestigious award.

Patty Murphy recently earned National Aquatic Fitness Instructor Certification. She is an instructor for Whitworth College and North Park Racquet Club.
