Former Idaho State University football player Sam Carter was formally charged with statutory rape following his indictment last month by a Bannock County grand jury. The ex-ISU wide receiver was ordered by 6th District Judge Peter McDermott to appear on Monday for arraignment on the two felony charges involving 14-year-old girls. Carter was released on his own recognizance as were former ISU player Derrick Carter, 22, no relation, senior Ike Johnson, 22, and junior Thomas Washington, 21.

In Plymouth, England, Italy won the Admiral’s Cup for the first time in the 38-year history of yachting’s most prestigious offshore regatta, dropping the United States into second place.

Herve Filion, harness racing’s winningest driver, was among 22 people charged in White Plains, N.Y., with participating in an international sports gambling and race-fixing ring.

Australia’s Susan O’Neill fell one lap short of breaking the longest standing women’s world record at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Atlanta. O’Neill, on world-record pace for 150 meters, won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:07.29. American Mary T. Meagher set the record of 2:05.96 on August 13, 1981.
