Third Chamber Concert To Introduce New Works

Travis Rivers

The Festival at Sandpoint will mix the new and the old at the third of its chamber music concerts Wednesday evening at the Green Gables Lodge at Schweitzer Resort near Sandpoint.

Three new works along with a romantic masterpiece by Brahms will be played by performers from the institute’s nine-member chamber ensemble joined by three players from the Spokane Symphony.

Young-Nam Kim, director of the Schweitzer Institute Chamber Ensemble, announced that Wednesday’s new works include a String Trio by Brooke Joyce, excerpts from “Ten Volcanoes” for violin and piano by Forrest Pierce, and the Sextet for Flute and Strings by Kurt Rohde.

“We always have at least one of the established masterpieces of chamber music on these programs,” Kim says. “Wednesday, we will finish the program with Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C minor.”

The new works for the festival’s chamber series were chosen by Donald Erb, the Schweitzer Institute’s composer-in-residence, and by artistic director Gunther Schuller. The nine composers studying under Erb’s direction are young professionals who have either recently completed university or conservatory training or are currently in graduate programs in music composition.
