Students Help Navy With Bayview Research

Four North Idaho high school students and one graduate are participating in an eight-week program with the Navy’s Acoustic Research Detachment in Bayview.

The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program placed academically talented students as apprentices in Department of Defense laboratories. They are working on specific research projects and will prepare a report documenting the results. Each student also receives a $1,300 scholarship.

The Idaho students and their schools are: Melanja Jones, Cocolalla, a Sandpoint High School senior; Daniel Kauffman, Coeur d’Alene, a North Idaho Christian School junior; Bechy Parfet, Bayview, and Skye Roseboom, Rathdrum, both seniors at Lakeland High School; and Curtis Wozniak, Hayden Lake, a Coeur d’Alene High School graduate.

Three North Idaho students, and another whose mother lives in the area, have enlisted in the U.S. Army’s Delayed Entry Program, which guarantees them a position in the Army and allows them a year before they must report for duty.

The students, schools and parents are:

Derek Long, a 1994 graduate of Falls Christian Academy in Post Falls, is the son of Aubrey and Wanda Long, Hayden Lake.

Levi Landis, a student at New Visions High School in Post Falls, is the son of James Landis, Post Falls, and the late Sarah McConnel.

Matthew Bobbe, a 1995 graduate of Project Coeur d’Alene High School, is the son of Judy and Larry Bobbe, Coeur d’Alene.

Sophia Fong, a Bremerton, Wash., high school graduate, is the daughter of Karen Stryker, Coeur d’Alene.

Three North Idaho students were selected to attend the 1995 Missoula Children’s Theatre Performing Arts Camp at Flathead Lake in Montana: Jeremy Gable, Post Falls; Jeff Waggoner, Coeur d’Alene; and Jill Gorman, Hayden Lake.
