Teen Charged With Vehicle Prowling

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane police charged a teenager early Friday with car prowling after a neighbor told police the boy was stealing from parked cars.

The 16-year-old, who lives on North VanMarter, had been stealing items from cars in the 1600 block of East LaCrosse about 5 a.m., said police spokesman Dick Cottam.

Police charged the teen with three counts of vehicle prowling. He was booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center.

The neighbor told police that he noticed the teen trying to break into his car and yelled at him.

Startled, the teen jumped on his bicycle and tried to escape. The man was able to catch up to the youth several blocks away and held the boy until officers arrived.

The man interrupted the teen before he was able to swipe anything from his car, police said.

Officers searched the teen’s backpack and found a bottle of prescription pills and some business cards that belonged to the owner of one vehicle, Cottam said. Officers said they also found a marijuana pipe and other drug paraphernalia.

Charges of possession of a stolen prescription drug and possession of drug paraphernalia were added.
