Greenpeace Strikes In Beijing Square

Compiled From Wire Services

The environmental group Greenpeace unfurled a banner this morning protesting China’s nuclear tests, and did so in the politically sensitive heart of the Chinese capital.

Plainclothes police tore the 8-foot banner out of the hands of five activists. The activists then tried to hold up smaller banners, which also were ripped away.

The one-minute demonstration, made more daring by being held under the portrait of Mao Tse-tung hanging on the Gate of Heavenly Peace facing Tiananmen Square, was the first ever staged by Greenpeace in China, organizers said.

The yellow banner, in English and Chinese, read “Stop All Nuclear Tests” and carried a picture of a nuclear bomb with an “X” over it.

Uniformed police pushed the activists off to the side, and detained them along with about eight to 10 foreign reporters.
