Man Carrying Grenade Drops By Police Station

From Staff Reports

Spokane police almost started their week with a bang.

The situation was tense at the Public Safety Building on Monday when a man showed up holding a grenade and several rounds of ammunition.

People stepped back. Police stepped up.

The man thought he was doing everyone a favor: A woman he knew had found the ammunition while looking through her late husband’s belongings. He had served in World War II.

The man, whose name was not available, knew that an old grenade could be dangerous. So he brought the grenade and the ammunition into the Public Safety Building about 11:30 a.m. He wanted police to take care of them. He wanted to save police a trip.

“We really would prefer that people didn’t bring explosives into the front desk of the police station,” said Sgt. Gil Moberly, of the Explosives Disposal Unit. “The best thing would be to leave it in place. It’s safer if it’s not moved around a lot.”

Moberly disposed of the grenade. He wouldn’t say how.

“I made it go away,” he said.
