Phillies’ Marsh In Fair Condition

Philadelphia Phillies left fielder Tom Marsh was in fair condition at a Houston hospital Wednesday with a concussion and a neck strain.

Marsh’s head hit a knee of Astros shortstop Orlando Miller on a play at second base Tuesday night.

Tobin is expected to be released today and be out for a week to 10 days.

Rehab continues

Giants third baseman Matt Williams will continue his rehabilitation from a broken foot when he joins Triple-A Phoenix on Friday.

Williams, who has gone 1 for 9 in Class A for San Jose, is expected to join the Pacific Coast League team at Tacoma.

Williams has been sidelined since breaking a bone in his right foot on a foul tip June 3. He was leading the N.L. in hitting (.381), homers (13) and RBIs (35) when he was injured.

Houston

Derrick May and Derek Bell hit RBI singles in the ninth inning to rally Houston past Philadelphia for the Phillies’ 16th loss in 20 games.

Dodgers 6, Cubs 1

Los Angeles

Ismael Valdes scattered seven hits and Mike Piazza, Tim Wallach and Eric Karros homered as Los Angeles beat Chicago to maintain its two-game lead over Colorado in the N.L. West.

The win was the fifth in six games for the Dodgers since they forfeited a game to St. Louis in the ninth inning last Thursday night because fans threw souvenir baseballs onto the field.

Marlins 8, Braves 5

Atlanta

Andre Dawson hit his first grand slam in more than four years and also had a solo home run and double, leading Florida to a win that ended its 10-game losing streak to the Braves.

Dawson, 41, connected for the seventh slam of his career, capping a five-run first inning against Steve Avery (5-9).

Mets 1, Expos 0

New York

Bill Pulsipher outdueled Carlos Perez in a matchup of rookies and New York blanked Montreal. The Mets stopped a three-game losing streak and ended the Expos’ winning string at four.

Rockies 6, Reds 4

Cincinnati

Dante Bichette hit his league-leading 28th homer to lead off a three-run sixth inning and Colorado went on to beat Cincinnati.

Bichette’s drive into the upper deck in left field off John Smiley (11-2) broke a scoreless tie. It was only the 19th homer to reach that level since Riverfront Stadium opened in 1970.

Giants 2, Cardinals 1

San Francisco

Mark Leiter pitched a three-hitter for his fifth complete game as San Francisco completed a three-game sweep with a win over St. Louis.

Mark Carreon drove in both runs for the Giants, who have tied their season high with four straight wins.

Padres 2, Pirates 0

San Diego

Andy Ashby pitched no-hit ball for 5-1/3 innings and extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings, leading San Diego past Pittsburgh.

Clearing the bases

The Rockies are 3-14 at Riverfront Stadium in their three years in the N.L… . The Dodgers broke the two million mark in home attendance for the 23rd straight season. The crowd of 41,090 at Wednesday’s game raised the season total to 2,040,803. The two million total was reached in the 54th home game, compared to the 49th game last year. … Bip Roberts, sidelined since aggravating a quadriceps injury July 14, will begin a rehabilitation assignment Friday at Rancho Cucamonga of the California League. He hopes to rejoin the San Diego roster next week.
