Dye Retires From Bsu, Leaving Coaching Duties To Assistant

Bobby Dye retired on Thursday after 12 years as Boise State’s head basketball coach. Rod Jensen, an assistant to Dye during that time, was named to succeed him.

Dye did not attend the news conference where Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier announced the retirement. Sports information director Max Corbet said Dye was at home and would not take any calls or answer questions until today, to ensure the spotlight stayed on Jensen.

Bleymaier said no specific incident led to Dye’s decision to step down now, and that retirement was something the coach had been talking about for several years.

Dye, 58, is the winningest basketball coach in Boise State and Big Sky Conference history. He retired with a record of 373-221 overall in 21 years as a head coach, including 213-133 for Boise State and 101-78 in Big Sky games.

He led the Broncos to Big Sky tournament championships in 1988, 1993 and 1994, regular-season league titles in 1988 and 1989, and three NCAA tournament appearances in 1988, 1993 and 1994.

Howie Shannon, an All-American on Kansas State’s champion 1948 basketball team who went on to play for two NBA teams, then coach Virginia Tech to backto-back NIT and NCAA berths, died of lung cancer on Wednesday in Plano, Texas. He was 72.
