Ex-Utah Swimmer Fined

Fri., Aug. 18, 1995

Former University of Utah swimmer Scott Wester has been placed on probation and fined $1,000 for stomping a student in the face.

Wester, 21, quit school after the Feb. 6 attack that left Thomas Martinez with a broken nose and fractured skull.

He was sentenced by 3rd Circuit Commissioner Francis Palacios, who suspended two one-year jail terms on condition he completes probation. She ordered him not to drink alcohol during the probation.

Erik Gustafson, 20, and Rupert Bryce, 26, former teammates of Wester’s, were given probation for their lesser roles in the attack.
