New And Old Will Conclude Chamber Series

Travis Rivers Correspondent

The Schweitzer Institute of Music concludes its summer chamber series with a performance today at Swan’s Landing Restaurant in Sandpoint. Performers from the institute will play works by Schweitzer Institute composition fellow Brooke Joyce, along with classic chamber masterpieces by Beethoven and Dvorak.

A brunch will be served following the performance.

Joyce, a composer from Appleton, Wisc., is one of nine young composers chosen to study with the Schweitzer Institute’s composer-in-residence, Donald Erb. Each of the nine composers has had works performed on the institute’s chamber programs. Some have also had works performed in reading sessions by the Spokane Symphony, led by Gunther Schuller, artistic director of The Festival at Sandpoint.

Performers on today’s program were selected from the Schweitzer Institute nine-member chamber ensemble by Young-Nam Kim, the ensemble’s director and coach. This group has performed six programs over the past two weeks at the Green Gable Lodge at Schweitzer Mountain Resort near Sandpoint, in the park at Post Falls and at The Met in Spokane. Each performance has included new works by young composers at the Schweitzer Institute as well as chamber music classics.
