William Vanderberg Spokane

Memorial service for William J. Vanderberg, 54, was Thursday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Vanderberg, who died Monday, was born in Spokane.

He graduated from Rogers High School and Gonzaga University.

Mr. Vanderberg worked as a mortgage broker and tax consultant.

He was an actor with both the Spokane Civic Theatre and the Kona Coast Players in Hawaii, where he had lived for a short time.

He is survived by one daughter, Vanessa Reeves of Seattle, and one sister, Jean Clark of Spokane.

Bette Anderson Coeur d’Alene

Service for Bette Anderson, 60, was held Wednesday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Anderson, who was born in East Detroit, Mich., died Sunday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1955 from Fraser, Mich., and married Lyle Anderson the same year.

Mrs. Anderson tended bar at the Cotton Club in Hayden Lake, Idaho, and later worked at Walden’s Market in Dalton Gardens before retiring in 1983.

She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene, the Eagles Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved camping and enjoyed crafts, genealogy and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1992 and a son in 1956.

Survivors include her husband, at home; two sons, Steven of Portland and John of Dalton Gardens; her daughter, Deborah Maddox of Dalton Gardens; three sisters, Shirley Polzin, Mary Tarkowski and Sandra Tyler, all of Fraser; and three grandchildren.

Irene Gunn Thompson Coeur d’Alene

An open house memorial service for Irene Gunn Thompson, 72, will be held Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the Log Cabin Restaurant, 213 Appleway, Coeur d’Alene. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thompson, who was born in Arkansas, died Monday at her home.

She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Lou and Charlie Burrows, in Harlowton, Mont., after the death of her parents.

She married Howard Thompson in 1942 and they moved to Utah. In 1953, she moved to Coeur d’Alene and became a waitress at several local restaurants. She owned and operated the Appleway Cafe for several years.

Mrs. Thompson was an avid bowler and bowled in leagues in Coeur d’Alene for many years.

Survivors include one son, James of Post Falls; one daughter, Danna Adams of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, Daniel Gunn of Billings, Mont., and James Lane of Arkansas; and three grandchildren.

Pauline Lemburg Nordman, Idaho

Private service was held for Pauline Mable Lemburg, 58.

Mrs. Lemburg, who died Sunday, was born in Shelton, Neb.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Nordman for 25 years.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Randy; one son, Robert Lemburg of Otis Orchards; one daughter, Kristy Pettit of Post Falls; three brothers, Edward “Eddy” Mortensen of Otis Orchards, George Mortensen of Georgia and John Mortensen of Spokane; five sisters, Lois Miller of Gibbon, Neb.; Frances Shafer and Mary Cardinal, both of Denver, Betty Stearley of Shelton, Neb., and Ann Crumrine of Grand Island, Neb.; and six grandchildren.

Julia Peters St. Maries

Memorial service for Julia G. Peters, 46, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at YatesHodge Funeral Home in St. Maries.

Ms. Peters, who was born in St. Maries, died Tuesday in Spokane.

She grew up in Fernwood, Idaho, near St. Maries, and later lived in Montana before returning to the area. She graduated from St. Maries High School and went on to attend the University of Idaho, graduating with a degree in education and history.

Ms. Peters later moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as a secretary for the postmaster general. She also taught school in Dayton, Ohio, and at Upriver Elementary School in Fernwood.

She was recently the principal at Upriver Elementary.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed coaching and playing baseball. She also bred poodles and enjoyed bowling and swimming.

Ms. Peters was the first recipient of the Sylvia Chase Scholarship at St. Maries High School and was a member of the National Association of Elementary Principals and the Idaho Association of School Administrators.

Survivors include a son, Jared Peters, her parents, Jack and Bonnie Peters, and a brother, Jon Peters, all of Fernwood.

Norma Hoots Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Memorial service for Norma Lee Hoots, 61, will be today at Alberta United Methodist Church in Tuscaloosa.

Mrs. Hoots, who was born in Tuscaloosa, died Monday.

She had lived in Spokane for 16 years before returning to Alabama seven years ago.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Geary Hoots of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one brother, Gaines Leavelle of Austin, Texas; one sister, Edna Wade of Tuscaloosa; and two grandchildren.

Edna Bowton Spokane

Service for Edna L. Bowton, 82, is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Berean Bible Church with burial to follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bowton died Tuesday.

She was born in Harrison Flats, Idaho, where her parents settled.

Mrs. Bowton was a homemaker and a member of the Berean Bible Church.

Her husband, Daniel Bowton, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald Wellington of Benton City, Wash., and Larry Bowton of Walla Walla; two sisters, Opal Palm and Lela D’Andrea, both of Spokane; 10 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Hospital Foundation.

Bruce Halliday Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Bruce A. Halliday, 55, will be Saturday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Hayden Lake, Idaho. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Halliday, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Tuesday at home. He grew up in Coeur d’Alene and was a sheet metal worker. He recently worked for Weaver Companies of Hayden Lake.

He married Kay Ingalls in 1962.

Mr. Halliday was a life member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Coeur d’Alene. He was also a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 66.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and cutting firewood. He also loved spending time with his family and enjoyed old cars and hard work.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Survivors include his wife, at home; two sons, Steve Halliday of Beaverton, Ore., and Duane Halliday of Lewiston; three brothers, Richard and Douglas, both of Coeur d’Alene, and Ronald of Lewiston; two grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews.
