Glass Artist And Gonzaga Hit Big Time
Talk about a glass act.
A major exhibit by glass artist Dale Chihuly, the man who made Northwest glass art famous, will open the new Jundt Art Museum at Gonzaga University on Oct. 27.
This is exciting news for Chihuly fans, who are legion. Chihuly went from being an obscure artist blowing glass in a Pilchuk meadow in the ‘70s to a one-man international art industry in the ‘90s. His works are in museums all over the world.
“This is the biggest thing to hit here in years,” said Jundt Art Museum director and curator Scott Patnode.
That is no exaggeration, at least in terms of glass art. It may even be an understatement.
This exhibit will be designed specially for the brand-new Jundt. It will consist of 20 works in Chihuly’s “macchia” series, 14 from his Niijima floats series, and 20 from his Persian series, arranged as a “Persian wall.” It will also include 10 Chihuly drawings.
This exhibit will coincide with the museum’s formal dedication on Oct. 27 and will continue until Dec. 15.
And what’s more, Chihuly will give a lecture at Gonzaga sometime in November, although the date has not been firmed up. The exact location has yet to be determined either, but it had better be someplace big.
“Celebration” canceled
If you’ve seen those “Celebration of Mother Earth” posters around town, pretend you didn’t.
This evening of American Indian drama and performance, scheduled for Aug. 24 at The Met, has been canceled.
A key person in the cast suffered a family tragedy last week (a car accident killed several family members), so the show has been postponed until sometime in October.
Ticketholders can get refunds at the point of purchase, or they can hold onto their tickets for the promised October performance. The show is a benefit for the American Indian Community Center.

Elton’s talk show
If you haven’t tuned in to David Elton’s talk show on KSBN-AM, 1230, you’ve missed some, well, you’ve missed something.
Elton hosts this show every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-7 p.m.
Elton is a Spokane Republican strategist who also happens to be the same guy who was escorted out of the anti-Dexter Amend rally by police on Thursday.
Elton promptly announced his list of “Top Ten Things Dexter Amend Should Do to Appease the Homosexual-Gay Community.”
The list included “Consult Richard Simmons” and “Sign up for sensitivity training and attend Broadway shows in drag.”
It concluded with “Come out of the closet and admit to being a Godfearing Christian.”
