Book report

Books of interest to Northwest travelers:

“Washington,” the latest addition to the Compass American guide series, is a delightful book about the state.

The $17.95 book’s emphasis is on history, culture and offbeat information, and it’s full of interesting stories (in Spokane, for example, more than 500 Wobblies were arrested during a period of labor unrest in 1909). There’s also excellent contemporary color photography and fascinating historical photos.

The writing is lively, the color maps are excellent and there’s enough information about places to stay, and eat, to be useful.

Epicenter Press has issued two new books in its Umbrella Guide series, both on Alaska. The south-central Alaska book covers Anchorage, Chugach State Park, the Kenai Peninsula, the Mat-Su Valley, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Prince William Sound.

The interior Alaska book covers the territory from Denali National Park to the Yukon River and the Canadian border. Highlights include favorite places for fishing, skiing, camping and gold panning. Both books are $12.95.
