The Hot Seat A Weekly Look At People And Issues In The News

Doing the Davenport two-step

Wai Choi Ng, owner of the fabulous Davenport Hotel, says he can’t get financing due to the oil spill caused by the Washington Water Power steam plant. WWP was a whole lot less than upfront about the spill in the first place. As one newsroom wag said, “There are no good guys in this deal.” But now, WWP has offered indemnity to local property owners against financial losses. Local bankers and business people think that agreement would make financing possible if the project is economically sound. Ng retorted that he would lay down a red carpet made of the finest Chinese silk for any banker willing to finance the hotel. But Spokane doesn’t want red silk carpets, nor do we appreciate the grandstanding. We want the Davenport Hotel. It’s time for Wai Choi Ng to put his cards on the table and stop this cat-and-mouse game with downtown.

Welcome to Fort Pat Buchanan

At Ross Perot’s United We Stand America rally Republican Pat Buchanan said he would dump NAFTA and build a wall along the Mexican border if elected president. OK, fine. And then, he can build walls around public housing projects to protect the good people from those on welfare. And he’ll have to wall off large ethnic communities because they attract illegal immigrants. But before he gets started, The Hot Seat is taking up a collection. We want to build a wall around Pat Buchanan.

And we thought it was impossible

Hard to believe but there is someone on the planet that can make Mike Tyson and Don King look smart, nearly dignified. His name is Peter “Hurricane” McNeeley. McNeeley’s agreed to get his brains beat out for $540,000, which is his business. But his stupid antics have made Tyson and King look respectable. We thought that was impossible.
