Amateur Gets Piece Of 1st Place

Local knowledge paid off for amateur Geoff Magnuson of Lewiston in the Washington Trust Bank Pro-Am Monday at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club.

Magnuson put together a 4-under-par 68 (35-33) to share first place with Tim Morton, head pro at Avondale, who shot 34-34.

A stroke back were pro Billy Ross of Wandermere (35-34) and amateur Bob Christensen of Painted Hills (35-34).

Five of the 45 pros and three of the 175 amateurs broke par.

One of the amateurs was Guy Ailor, a 6-handicapper from Bryden Canyon, who won the 0-8-handicap division with a net 64. His score was adjusted to 65, five below the course rating.

Dave Johnston of Downriver (78-10) and Herb Gentman of MeadowWood (79-11) shared the 9-13 handicap lead with 68s. The 14-and-up lead was shared by Mike Murphy of Bryden Canyon (81-18) and Bill Goyner of Highlands (82-18) with adjusted 65s.

Next Monday’s Pro-Am will be at the University of Idaho course.

Tennis

Spokane’s Mike Kraft beat Chris Casey of Hayden Lake 6-4, 6-0 Sunday to capture men’s open singles title at the Kootenai County Championships in Coeur d’Alene.

Other winners: Women’s singles-Julie McCort (over K.C. Richards of Spokane). Women’s doubles-McCourt and Patty Aunan. Men’s doubles-Casey and his father, Mike. Mixed doubles- Tony Cox and Lisa Benscheidt.

Hockey

Tickets for two Spokane Chiefs exhibition games are on sale at the Western Hockey League club’s ticket office in Veterans Memorial Arena and the G&B Select-A-Seat outlet at 720 W. Mallon.

The Chiefs, who open training camp Thursday, play the Portland Winter Hawks Sept. 3 and Seattle Thunderbirds Sept. 10, both at 6 p.m. at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
