Johnny Hale Spokane

Memorial service for Johnny H. Hale, 57, is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1435, where he was a member.

Mr. Hale died last Thursday in Portland, where he had lived for the past three years.

He was born in Akersville, Ky., and had lived in Spokane for more than 20 years. He worked as an auto mechanic and well driller and had also worked as an apartment manager.

He served in the Navy from 1954 until 1969.

Mr. Hale was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1435 and the Military Order of the Cooties, Pup Tent No. 23, in Spokane.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Portland; one son, John Hale of Portland; three daughters, Traci Freschette of Kent, Wash., Terri Samuels of Wellpinit, Wash., and Toni Crandall of Santa Ana, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Morgana Griffin, Barb Meithe and Sherry Marcy, all of Spokane; one sister, Marie Purvis of Spokane; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Dorothy Green Post Falls

At her request, no service for Dorothy L. Green, 65, who died Monday in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Green was born in Jackson, Wyo., where she was raised and educated. She graduated from high school in 1948 and moved to Coeur d’Alene, where she lived for 15 years before moving to Post Falls.

She was a cook who worked in Creston, Wash., Liberty Lake and Post Falls. She is best remembered as working at the G and H Tavern in Post Falls.

She enjoyed outdoor gardening, fishing and flowers.

Survivors include her sons, Dan and Tom Goodrick, both of Post Falls, and Zane Goodrick of Coeur d’Alene; one daughter, Debi Galloway of Post Falls; her mother and stepfather, Selma and Wayne May; one brother, Rudy Sanford; three sisters, Marje Budge, Hazel Staley and Charlene Bressler, all of Jackson; several grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sherrilyn House Spokane

Memorial service for Sherrilyn J. House, 36, will be private. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss House died Monday as a result of multiple sclerosis.

She was born in La Jolla, Calif., and had lived in Spokane for 27 years.

She is survived by her parents, James and Shirley House of Spokane; three brothers, David House of Vista, Calif., William House of Spokane and Jamie House of Veradale; and one sister, Theresa Blackburn of Veradale.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wishing Star Foundation.

Joyce Swanson Spokane

Memorial service for Joyce V. Swanson, 75, is set for 3 p.m. today at Valley Alliance Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Swanson, who died Aug. 14, was born in Youngsville, Pa.

She moved to Spokane as a toddler and graduated from Rogers High School.

During World War II she worked at a defense depot in the Greenacres area. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Swanson was a member of Valley Alliance Church.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Merle Swanson.

Hester Hutsinpiller Kennewick

Memorial service for Hester M. Hutsinpiller, 101, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Manito Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Hutsinpiller, who died Monday in Kennewick, was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

She was a former 60-year Spokane resident and had lived in the Tri-Cities for the past 10 years.

She retired as a teacher in 1965 after teaching at Whittier Elementary School.

Mrs. Hutsinpiller was a charter member of the Associated Garden Club and Gladiola Society and a member of Federated Garden Club.

She was a master judge in the Arrangers Guild and was a member of the Lilac Society. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, the Retired Teachers Association, the Kloneson Study Club, Adelphi Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Spokane Symphony Association and The Spokane Club.

She was also a member of Manito Presbyterian Church, served as a teacher and superintendent of Sunday school, and was a member of the choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Jay” Hutsinpiller, in 1965.

She is survived by one daughter, Ann Hutsinpiller of Richland; one son, James Hutsinpiller of Spokane; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Gary Koeppel Spokane

Memorial service for Gary D. Koeppel, 55, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fowler United Methodist Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Koeppel, a 50-year Spokane resident, died Friday.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from North Central High School and Gonzaga University and from Eastern Washington University with a master’s degree in urban planning and development.

He worked for the Spokane County Planning Department, state of Washington Department of Agriculture, Army Corps of Engineers, Soil Conservation Service, and for a short time the Benton County Planning Department.

Mr. Koeppel was a member of Fowler United Methodist Church and had served in the Army.

His wife, Susan Koeppel, died in 1994.

He is survived by his mother, Lillie Koeppel of Spokane; and one sister, Joy Barnes of Everett.

Alvin Clark Spokane

Service for Alvin F. Clark, 92, is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Clark, who died Tuesday, was a 76-year Spokane resident.

He was born in Eureka, Mont.

He drove truck for Diamond Match Co. for 32 years and received an award for 1 million accident-free miles while driving truck.

Mr. Clark was a member of Edgecliff Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Icaleen; one son, Norman Clark of Spokane; two daughters, Gwenith Clark and Shirley Malcolm, both of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Norman Bader Spokane

Private service will be held for Norman A. Bader, 76. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Bader, who died Saturday, was born in Portland.

He served in the Army during World War II, and later worked as a systems analyst for the Army. He retired in 1976.

He had lived in Spokane for 10 years.

Mr. Bader was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Spokane Chiefs Booster Club.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ressa; one son, Spencer Bader of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one daughter, Susan Boysun of Spokane; one brother, Stanley Bader of Burbank, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Gary Strode Spokane

A gathering for Gary E. Strode, 47, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1474. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Strode, a former longtime Coeur d’Alene resident, died Monday.

He was born in Coeur d’Alene and lived there until six years ago, when he moved to Spokane.

He had worked for Rosauers grocery stores in Spokane.

Mr. Strode served in the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; his mother, Frances Strode of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Jennie Saunders and Cindy Gallina, both of Spokane; and one grandson.

Kory Holbrook Spokane

Funeral Mass for Kory Loy Holbrook, 2, will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spirit Lake, Idaho. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Kory, who was born in Spokane on June 14, 1993, died Saturday at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.

Survivors include his mother, Rea Holbrook of Priest River, Idaho; his father, Jeff Johl of California; his stepfather, Gavin Ritzler of Spokane; his grandparents, Kirby and Elva Holbrook of Priest River, Barry Ritzler of New Jersey, Judy Ritzler of Florida, and Retha Gray and Hardhajan Johl, both of California; great-grandparents, Edna Holbrook of Moscow, Idaho, Russell and Ellen Ritzler of Indiana, and Zelma Walden of St. Maries; and several uncles and cousins.

Arnold Gish Spokane

Service will be held for Arnold E. Gish, 71. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Emerson, Ark., Mr. Gish died Monday.

He was a 50-year Spokane resident and had worked as a fireman for Union Pacific Railroad.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Gish’s wife, Goldie, died in 1966.

He is survived by three daughters, Elleen Doyle, Judy Budrow and Linda Johnson, all of Spokane; one son, Robert Gish of Deer Park; one brother, Lawrence Gish; three sisters, Tampa Knight, Alma Rhymes and Nora Wilkerson; seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
