Columbia Basin Team Wins Babe Ruth Title

The Columbia Basin Junior River Dogs avenged a loss early Saturday to win the Babe Ruth 16-year-old World Series, beating Iron Area, N.J., 3-0.

The River Dogs came into the championship game undefeated, forcing Iron Area would have to beat them twice.

Iron Area grabbed the first win, scoring a 5-4 victory in nine innings as Chris Carter scored on a trick play. With Carter on third base, Shawn Stokes faked stealing second base and River Dog catcher Kory Thaut threw to second. Carter then came home before Columbia Basin could get the ball back to the plate.

In the second game, the River Dogs pulled out the win despite getting only three hits.

Ben Kayser went 6-1/3 innings, giving up seven hits while walking one and striking out three. Tucker Urdahl from Cheney got the final two outs for the save, both strikeouts. Thaut was named MVP of the tournament.
