Recovery Likely For Rockies Fan, 6

Six-year-old Cameron Wilson, hospitalized after being struck by a foul ball at a Colorado Rockies game, awoke Saturday and his first words were, “Hi, dad, I need a hug.”

Friday, the first-grader, his parents, an aunt and grandmother were sitting behind the Rockies’ dugout during the 8-3 loss to St. Louis.

In the bottom of the ninth, Eric Young hit a hard line drive toward right field, which struck Cameron on the left ear, knocking him unconscious. As players left their positions to see what had happened, the boy’s grandmother, Kathy Wilson, cried, “Oh God, not my Cameron.”

James Wilson, the boy’s father, said the ball whizzed past the family so fast, they didn’t even see it.

The Wilsons carried their son to a first-aid center at Coors Field, but he rapidly deteriorated and was taken to Denver General Hospital. Tina Wilson said her son, who was bleeding from his left ear, began vomiting, broke out in a cold sweat and had dilated eyes.

Saturday, a nursing supervisor said Cameron was doing “really well” and was listed in fair condition.

Dr. Stewart Levy, chief neurosurgeon at DGH, said Cameron had a skull fracture, a small blood clot and some bleeding on the brain.

He also sustained a subdural hematoma, or a bruise, on the left side of his brain, a situation that was the most worrisome, Levy added.

Doctors said it would be weeks for a complete recovery.
