Cubs Halt Braves’ Win Streak

Sammy Sosa hit a pair of two-run homers and scored three times Monday as the Cubs defeated Atlanta at Chicago 7-5, ending the Braves’ seven-game winning streak.

Jaime Navarro (12-5) allowed six hits and had a career-high nine strikeouts in 7-1/3 innings to help the Cubs move within 2-1/2 games of Philadelphia in the N.L. wild-card race.

Reds 5, Cardinals 2

Cincinnati

Barry Larkin hit his 100th career home run and drove in four runs to lead Cincinnati past St. Louis.

Reds pitcher David Wells (4-1) allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked none in his second straight complete game.

Marlins 6, Astros 4

Miami

Quilvio Veras scored twice and drove in two runs as Florida completed a four-game sweep of Houston.

The Marlins extended their home winning streak to 14 games.

Rockies 6, Pirates 3

Pittsburgh

Eric Young had three hits and drove in three runs as Colorado defeated slumping Pittsburgh.

Shortstop Jay Bell’s two-out error and Ross Powell’s walk of Colorado starter Roger Bailey led to Young’s go-ahead two-run triple in the fourth inning.

Los Angeles catcher Mike Piazza was named the N.L. player of the week after hitting .467 with eight home runs and 14 RBIs… . Philadelphia pitcher Tommy Greene was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of an inflamed right shoulder… . Florida placed righthander Randy Veres on the 15-day disabled list because of a bruised right hand… . Jeff Bagwell went 0-for-2 with two walks in his first game in four weeks as the designated hitter for Houston’s Double-A affiliate at Jackson, Miss.
