Games For Windows 95 Coming Out By Christmas

Roy Bassave Miami Herald

So Windows 95 is here. Now, the question is: When will all the computer games that can be played on Windows 95 arrive?

There aren’t many available yet. But the ones that are out so far are generally very good.

Among them: “Battle Beast,” an animated fighting game from Time Warner Interactive; “Doom,” from ID Software; and “Pitfall,” from Activision.

By Christmas, more than 100 games should be available that will run on the Windows 95 operating system.

Some of them will come from a joint venture of Microsoft Corp. and Softbank called Gamebank, created to publish games for Windows 95 that already are available for other home video game systems, including Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation and 3DO.

And what happens when you play your old games on Windows 95?

With early, prerelease versions of Windows 95, there were problems playing games like “Doom, Dark Forces” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation - Final Unity.” But Microsoft has fixed those problems.

One caveat: Your present software may run slower in Windows 95 if you have only eight megabytes of random access memory, or RAM. Windows 95 uses a lot of memory, so it might be time to add more RAM if you want to get the most from your computer games.
