Airlines Woo Fall Travelers With Lower Fares, New Flights

From Staff Reports

Horizon Air Wednesday announced reduced fares on flights from all of the 37 cities it serves in the western United States and Canada.

The move is the latest by several U.S. carriers - including Southwest, Northwest, Delta and United - to cut ticket costs for fall travel.

The new Horizon fares out of Spokane range from $39 to five locations, including Boise, Portland and Seattle, to $99 to Calgary.

The fares are one way based on round-trip travel, with a Saturday night stay required. Various fees are excluded.

Reservations are required seven days in advance, and must be made by September 13. Travel must take place between September 16 and December 14.

Thanksgiving dates do not qualify for the fares.

Kelly Shelffo, a travel agent at Uniglobe, said other airlines have set a Friday deadline for bookings, also for travel by December 15.

“They all matched each other on discounts,” she said.

Consumer response to the new reductions has been muted so far, Shelffo added.

At Southwest Airlines, which is offering discount fares through Sept. 7, officials announced Wednesday that the airline is expanding Spokane service.

Station manager David Yarbrough in Spokane said Southwest last Saturday began its fourth non-stop flight to Portland, leaving at 5 p.m.

On Oct. 4, the airline will add a fifth non-stop flight to Portland, departing at 1:10 p.m. On the same day, Southwest will add its eighth non-stop flight to Seattle, leaving at 2:15 p.m.

The 5 p.m. flight to Portland continues on to Las Vegas, Yarbrough said. The October flight to Portland will continue on to Chicago, with stops in Salt Lake City and Kansas City.

Air fares vary and travelers should call the airline or their travel agent for the best rates, Yarbrough said.

Southwest, Horizon and Horizon’s sister carrier Alaska Airlines dominate short-haul service at Spokane International with frequent flights to other Western cities.

United, Northwest and Delta are the national airlines serving Spokane.
