Gingrich Says Firing Historian Was Wrong

Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday that the House may hire as a consultant the historian he fired early this year because of her controversial review of a Holocaust curriculum.

Gingrich called the firing of Christina F. Jeffrey “totally inappropriate,” even though he personally forced her out as House historian last January - soon after she was hired.

Jeffrey, a Georgia college professor, was fired after it was disclosed that she chaired a 1986 review panel that complained a Holocaust course failed to present Nazi and Ku Klux Klan views. She was a consultant at the time to the U.S. Department of Education.
