Central Valley’s Shane Cunanan and East Valley’s Justin Walker, soccer teammates since kindergarten and returning state veteran wrestlers, found themselves in an awkward position Thursday night.
The two buddies wrestled each other at 115 pounds during the season opening All-Valley double dual.
GSL schools CV and University annually square off against EV and West Valley in a pair of matches.
Coaches like to wrestle as many athletes as possible but match better kids against each other when possible.
Such was the case when the two sophomores squared off.
Walker beat the third-place state finishing Cunanan 5-2 thanks to a pair of takedowns.
The distraught Cunanan said afterward, “I’m not in the best shape right now. I need to work harder.”
University, the GSL’s defending champion and one of five early season GSL title contenders outlasted WV 37-31 and beat the Knights 46-22.
The Titans used 25 different wrestlers in 28 matches, forfeiting four and winning 15 of the 24 that were contested.
GSL favorite CV was beaten twice, by the Knights and Eagles. The Bears wrestled 26 different competitors in as many matches.
A quartet of Eagles, freshman Ty Roberts at 101, Andy Imada at 148, Jason Miller at 178 and Josh Castor at 215 won twice each.
EV’s 275-pounder Ben Wise was also a double winner. EV swept two weights with different wrestlers. Gary Adamson and Kevin Woolf won at 108. Joe Adamson and Cory Crawford won at 122.
