Compiled By Mary Beth Donelan

Two teams of Gonzaga University law students captured first and second place in a regional moot court competition held Nov. 16-18 at the University of Idaho College of Law, Moscow.

The team of Gary Hood, Joan Jakel and Kevin Pearson defeated another GU team of Kristine Kuenzli, Raymond Oster and Shannon Trevithick in the final round.

They were among 13 teams from seven Pacific Northwest law schools at the competition on the University of Idaho campus.

Kuenzli was named the top oralist in the competition, and Hood won second place as oralist.

Travis Mooney, a 1995 Gonzaga University graduate, placed second in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Student Paper Contest for his paper, “Analysis and Design of a 10-Band Graphic Equalizer.”

To compete in last month’s Region 6 contest in San Francisco, finalists had to win their respective area Student Paper Contests. There are some 100 schools of electrical engineering and technology in the region.

Mooney developed his equalizer as an addition to his home theater system. It features a stereo model, additional bass band and the use of modern devices with improved performance characteristics and quality.

He was awarded a $300 cash prize and a certificate of merit.

Lisa Appel of Dusty, Wash., won the junior division in the state contest, “Make It Yourself with Wool,” sponsored by the Washington Wool Growers Association.

Appel, 14, sewed a plaid kilt from Pendleton wool, complete with buckle closure, as well as a blazer and newsboy cap. She will compete nationally next month in Albuquerque, N.M.

Jamie Meenach, 17, Valleyford, represented the Spokane area in the state competition with her suit and vest. She is a senior at Freeman High School.

Brian Lamb, a professor at Washington State University since 1979 and an expert in atmospheric and air quality research, has been named Boeing’s Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering.

The renewable environmental professorship is for three years.

Lamb was selected for his “outstanding scholarship and international reputation in the field.”

Heidi Cutler, a 1995 graduate of Lakeside High School in Nine Mile Falls and a clarinet player, has been named a Campbell Music Scholar at Whitman College.

She is the daughter of Kit and Debora Hart Cutler.

Airman Jason Peetz, son of Robert Peetz, Deer Park, and Patricia Nelson, Spokane, has been named Student of the Month for the 338th Training Squadron. He is a ground radio communications apprentice with the 81st Training Wing at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Miss.

Peetz is a 1989 graduate of Central Valley High School.
