Umass Gets Another Victory Against A Quality Opponent

Marcus Camby scored 30 points and No. 5 Massachusetts (3-0) turned in another suffocating defensive effort Sunday, winning the Franklin National Bank Classic in Landover, Md., with an 80-58 rout of Florida (2-2).

UMass led 37-18 at halftime and upped the margin to 29 points before coasting to its third victory in six days. The first two wins were against ranked opponents, the third against a team that made the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two years.

Camby was MVP of the two-day tournament.

Doron Sheffer made two free throws with 9.2 seconds left, and the Huskies withstood a late rally by the Eagles for the victory in the Big East opener for both schools in Hartford, Conn.

Connecticut (4-1) had the lead with 4 minutes left, but the Eagles (3-1) rallied to cut the margin to 61-60 before Sheffer made two free throws to ice the game.

Johnny Rhodes led a rejuvenated Maryland offense with 21 points, and the Terrapins (2-2) cruised past the crosstown rival Colonials (2-2) in the consolation game of the Franklin National Bank Classic.

Jesse Pate scored nine points and Kareem Reid had three assists during a 21-2 run as the Razorbacks (3-2) routed the Braves (2-2) in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
