Earthquake Victims

Associated Press

Almost half of those who died in the Kobe earthquake in January were elderly, and among the elderly the disaster killed nearly two women for every man, an official report said Monday.

The detailed report from the Health and Welfare Ministry confirmed earlier estimates that a large number of the 6,000 people killed in the Jan. 17 quake were elderly.

Among quake victims of all ages, three women died for every two men.
