Golden Pen Award Winner

The Spokesman-Review is pleased to announced that Carley Burrell of Spokane has won the monthly Golden Pen Award.

In her Oct. 30 letter, Burrell commented on a teenager’s brutal assault on an 81-year-old man. She questioned how mere words could provoke such violence, much less justify it. Burrell said also people must accept responsibility for their actions.

The Golden Pen Award expresses the newspaper’s appreciation for letter writers and artists who demonstrate exceptional eloquence and clarity in their contributions to our Roundtable page.

The monthly winners, as well as the weekly nominees for this award, are chosen by Opinion page staff members. The monthly winners receive a 10-karat-gold Cross pen.

We congratulate Miss Burrell and thank all of the readers who care enough to debate public issues on this page.
