Yankees Study Options After Trade Talks Stall With M’S Over Martinez

With their pursuit of first baseman Tino Martinez stalled because they removed third baseman Russ Davis from the discussions, the New York Yankees have angered the Seattle Mariners and are considering other options in securing a replacement for Don Mattingly.

A Yankees executive said talks with the Mariners were “not dead.” But a Seattle official said the only way to breathe life back into them was for New York to return Davis to the equation.

It remained uncertain if the Yankees would do that, and general manager Bob Watson added to the muddled picture Monday by speaking to the agents for two other free agents - first baseman Mark Grace and B.J. Surhoff, who can play first base, third base, catcher or the outfield.

The situation is so snarled the Yankees have not even officially announced Wade Boggs’ agreement on a two-year contract with a club option for a third season. The return of Boggs at third base was expected to make Davis expendable via trade.

Kim Batiste, an infielder who won a 1993 National League playoff game for Philadelphia, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the annual major league draft.

Former Spokane Indians right-hander Greg Keagle was selected from the Seattle Mariners by the Detroit Tigers.

Players taken in the draft - those left off 40-man rosters after several years in the minors - must be kept on the major league roster for the entire 1996 season. If their new teams want to send them to the minors, they must first be offered to their old teams for $25,000.

The Baltimore Orioles have refused to renew the contract of assistant general manager Frank Robinson, who spent 19 years in the organization as a player, manager and front office executive.

The Detroit City Council voted 7-2 to approve spending $40 million to help build a new stadium for the Tigers.

The Florida Marlins traded center fielder Chuck Carr to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league right-handed pitcher Juan Gonzalez.
