Ferris Band, Drill Team Win 19 Competition Awards

The Ferris High School Marching Band and Drill Team are collecting awards and tributes right and left these days. During their most-successful year ever, the musicians and marchers won 19 awards from the four competitions they entered this fall.

First, they received three awards at the Puget Sound Festival of Bands in October: first place in the Open Division, Best Percussion and Best Marching.

They took first in the Auburn (Wash.) Veterans Day Marching Band Competition and scored 93.35 in the Field Show, securing first place in the Open Division. They also won Best Marching, Best Percussion and the Sweepstakes Award, which combines the Field and Parade scores.

And Ferris was recently notified that its band and drill team have been selected to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 1.

The following Inland Northwest military people have been honored with awards:

Wayne Harrington, son of Vern Harrington, Cheney, received a Letter of Appreciation while assigned with Naval Computer Telecommunications Station, Jacksonville, Fla. He is a 1985 graduate of Cheney High School.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Paul Woodworth, son of Betty Woodworth, Kettle Falls, Wash., and Lyle Woodworth, Evans, Wash., received a Letter of Commendation while assigned with Strike Fighter Squadron One Four Six, Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif. He is a 1983 graduate of Kettle Falls High School.

Sgt. David Riddle, son of Larry and Velma Riddle, Othello, Wash., received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving with the Marine Corps with 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Twentynine Palms, Calif. He is a 1981 graduate of Othello High School.

Sgt. David Pond, son of Gene and Sharon Pond, Kettle Falls, received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal while serving with Combat Service Support Detachment 21, 2nd Force Service Support Group, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C. He is a 1989 graduate of Kettle Falls High School.

Spec. David Wyant, son of Kathleen Wyant and Bernard Wyant, both of Spokane, has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal while stationed as a wheeled vehicle mechanic in Kitzingen, Germany. He is a 1989 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Jeff Abrahamson has received the rank of Eagle Scout.

He has been in Scouting for 11 years and is a member of Troop 356. His Eagle service project was to build five prayer tables for St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Cheney.

Abrahamson, a senior at Cheney High School, is a member of the varsity golf team and is the lead percussionist in the Cheney 1 Jazz Band. He is the son of Jim and Marti Abrahamson, Cheney.

Katie Brattebo, daughter of Thomas and Bette Brattebo, Spokane, received an Air Force ROTC scholarship and will attend college at the University of Portland; she will be commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation. She is a 1995 graduate of West Valley High School.

Doug Tooke, a sophomore from Spokane attending Carroll College, Helena, is a member of Talking Saints, the school’s forensic team, which won first place in the recent Regional Forensics Championship competition at Linfield College, McMinnville, Ore. Tooke won five awards.

Jon Hood, Spokane, is serving as a resident assistant at Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa, where he is a history major.
