What’d The Robber Say? ‘Jumanji Or Your Life!’

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

Wondering just what in the heck a “Jumanji” is? Turns out you’re not the only one.

The title to Robin Williams’ new film, about a man freed from a magical jungle board game after being trapped for 26 years, is a Zulu word meaning “many effects.”

Not that anyone actually understands that, Williams has learned.

“Some guy came up to me and said, ‘Jumanji’? That’s the movie about the baseball player, isn’t it?”’ he says.

“It’s amazing how many times it has been mispronounced. I even get, ‘You’re doing that bio of Jim Janee. I’ve heard of him.”’

Finally, Williams decided he might just as well play along: “Now when people ask me what Jumanji means, I tell them it’s an island in the Caribbean. Book your travel there early.”

Loose talk

Brooke Shields, on her bunion surgery (in the new book “A Passion for Shoes”): “I had to have both feet broken. But now I can wear high heels without three Tylenols.” Celebrity spouses? Yeah, he’s had his Cher

Greg Allman turns 48 today.

It was insulting to an actress of her caliber

Jennifer Lopez, who plays a police officer in the movie “Money Train,” demanded more firepower after discovering she was supposed to carry a .38 while co-stars Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson were packing 9 mm handguns. “A .38 is such a girl gun,” said Lopez, who once dated a policeman. “I’m not going to carry some sissy revolver.”

Guess she got tired of being called ‘Butthead’

People magazine reports that Jason Hervey, who played Fred Savage’s obnoxious big brother Wayne on “The Wonder Years,” has filed for divorce from his wife of 1 years, socialite Kelley Patricia O’Neill.

For once, it appears he’s actually listening

“Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer has taken his romantic troubles with fiancee Tammi Alexander to the airwaves, telling Oprah Winfrey: “I’m working on this one. I didn’t work on the other ones, I just ran … Tammi is worth the effort.” Added Alexander, who was in the audience: “He is a handful, but he is worth it.”

He just wanted to be sure he got his fair cut

John Wayne Bobbitt has signed a property settlement with wife Lorena, the last step necessary before their divorce becomes final. And just to show that he’s letting bygones be bygones, Bobbitt sketched a small knife next to his signature.

It’s still going to cost her an arm and a leg

And speaking of amputees, a bankruptcy judge has proposed that Kim Basinger pay a producer $3.8 million to resolve the ongoing legal dispute over her walking out of “Boxing Helena,” the 1993 film about a surgeon who removes the limbs of a woman he loves. An appeals court previously overturned an $8.1 million judgment.
